Qualcomm Technologies announced Qualcomm Snapdragon Smart Protect which supports on-device behavioral analysis for high security and malware detection on the forthcoming Snapdragon 820 processor.
It is extending its mobile security technology leadership with the introduction of its new Qualcomm Snapdragon Smart Protect.
The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor is the first platform offering Snapdragon Smart Protect, providing real-time, on-device machine learning designed to support accurate and effective detection of zero-day malware threats for improved personal privacy and device security.
Snapdragon Smart Protect is engineered to look at the actual behavior of device applications in real time and almost instantly detect and classify any application behavior that is considered suspicious or anomalous. Suspicious applications are classified into severity levels of malware, ranging from more destructive malware applications, to spyware apps, to less threatening though annoying adware apps.
Snapdragon Smart Protect is also the first application to utilize Qualcomm Zeroth technology, augmenting conventional anti-malware solutions by supporting on device real-time malware detection, classification and cause analysis using an advanced cognitive computing behavioral engine.
Zeroth is highly-optimized heterogeneous hardware and software architecture that is uniquely designed to deliver high performance on-device cognitive capabilities by taking full advantage of Snapdragon processors’ heterogeneous compute capabilities, as well as algorithmic innovations in machine learning and low power sensor processing.
Snapdragon Smart Protect is designed to analyze and detect new malicious apps before their signature files have been incorporated into the signature databases of traditional AV apps.
OEMs and mobile anti-malware application providers can also use Snapdragon Smart Protect API’s to perform valuable causal analysis, offering users and the mobile industry real-time information of identified threats.
Another advantage of Snapdragon Smart Protect is the fact that it was designed to operate primarily on device, rather than in the cloud. Snapdragon Smart Protect performs observation and analysis on the device in real time. So it doesn’t need to be connected, providing always-on monitoring of application behavior.
Snapdragon Smart Protect is unique behavioral-based anti-malware technology in that it is based in hardware.
“With consumers storing more personal information on their devices, data leakage incidents and malware are on the rise. Qualcomm Technologies is uniquely equipped to address these issues with our ability to access lower layers of the software stack and dedicated security hardware, to create a device-based, behavioral analysis approach for mobile security. Snapdragon Smart Protect supports deep on-device monitoring for nearly instantaneous notifications of detected privacy violations and malicious activity while also providing great system performance and battery life.”
Qualcomm Technologies is working in close collaboration with OEMs and mobile security providers like Avast, AVG and Lookout to make Snapdragon Smart Protect capabilities available within commercial anti-malware apps.
Snapdragon Smart Protect is expected to be available in consumer devices in the first half of 2016, in conjunction with the Snapdragon 820 processor.
